Hair loss is expressed in different ways among different people. While many men, for example, who have hair loss problems will suffer from a receding hairline, there are plenty of those who have a seemingly perfect hairline but suffer from hair loss in the tonsure area – at the crown of the head.
Hair transplant tonsure requests are becoming more common in hair clinics around the world, and luckily, the procedures often yield permanent, natural results. So, if you want a full head of hair that looks natural and luxurious, transplants are the best option.
Let’s take a look at tonsure hairtransplants, see the best methods for this procedure, and check out what you can expect in the process.
TONSURE HAIR LOSS
While some people suffering from hair loss might have random bald patches, in most instances, hair loss is patterned in both sexes. Patterned hair loss means that you’ll experience hair thinning in a systematic way, usually starting from the hairline back. It can be caused by a variety of different factors, underlying illness, medical treatments, genetics, diet, stress levels, and other pre-determined and environmental influences.
To measure the severity of hair loss, doctors and surgeons rely on the Norwood scale, which consists of seven stages. In the first two stages, hair loss begins at the hairline, although it’s not immediately noticeable. It becomes more severe in the third stage, which shows the first clear signs of balding.
In stage three, you’ll notice a deeply recessed hairline in the signature shape of M (or W, depending on how you look at it). However, in a variety of stage three, known as stage three vertex, your hairline will remain pretty much unchanged, but your hair will start thinning at the tonsure (also known as vertex or the crown of the head).
Between the fourth and seventh stages, hair loss will progress until a patient’s head only has a ring of hair on the sides of the head.
It’s important to seek treatment before reaching the sixth or seventh stage as your hair might be too thin and unhealthy for a successful transplant.
Hair Transplantation Tonsure – Best Methods
Caught in time, hair loss can be treated with a transplant to the affected recipient sites. For tonsure hair restoration, your doctor will extract hair from the donor area in the back of your head and implant it into the recipient area(the vertex/tonsure).
There are two popular hair transplantation tonsure procedures – follicular unit extraction FUE, where all the necessary hair follicles are first extracted from the donor site then inserted into the recipient sire, and direct hair implantation DHI, where individual follicles are extracted then immediately inserted one by one.
FUE Hair Transplant
FUE procedure is considered to be the most advanced hair restoration surgery. During the FUE hair transplant, your doctor will start removing hair from the donor area while you’re under a local anesthetic. The existing hair will be divided into about 2,000 to 4,000 grafts (depending on the health and thickness of the donor’s hair and the condition of the recipient area).
After removing hair and carefully separating it into grafts, your doctor will insert the grafts one by one into the tonsure area. After a few months of hair growth, you should have a full head of hair with no signs of surgery.
DHI Hair Transplant
The DHI procedure is very similar to the FUE procedure; the only difference is in the tool used. For a DHI hair transplant, your doctor will use a small needle to extract a hair graft then immediately insert it into the tonsure area using the same tool.
Both FUE and DHI procedures typically last between six and eight hours.
Shaving your head – the scalp area, which acts as the donor site, and the area which acts as the recipient site – is usually advised. It is possible to perform the FUE surgery without shaving in some instances, although it can impact the quality of the grafts and damage many of them.
Your doctor will give you the best advice on whether you should shave or not.
