Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth: Does It Really Work?

Peppermint essential oil has become something of a darling in natural hair care circles. People credit it with stimulating properties, effects on par with minoxidil, and remarkable regrowth results. And unusually for natural remedies, these claims aren’t entirely unfounded—there is actual scientific research behind them, with numbers that look genuinely impressive.

The snag? This research was done on mice. Not humans. And that distinction matters rather a lot.
The study everyone’s talking about
Back in 2014, Korean researchers set out to discover whether peppermint oil genuinely affects hair growth. They designed a solid protocol: 76 male mice split into four treatment groups, observed over four weeks.
Group one got plain saline solution. Group two received jojoba oil as a baseline comparison. Group three was treated with 3% minoxidil. And the fourth group got peppermint oil diluted to 3% in jojoba oil.
The peppermint group’s results caught everyone off guard. Compared with jojoba alone, these mice showed three times more hair follicles, dermis 81% thicker, and follicles nearly twice as deep. Their visual growth score hit 92%, whilst the minoxidil group managed 55%.
On paper, peppermint oil absolutely trounces the standard treatment. But here’s the rub: mice don’t go bald the way we do. Their hair regrowth patterns bear little resemblance to human androgenetic alopecia.
What’s actually happening beneath the scalp
Understanding these results means looking at what’s in the oil. The key player is menthol, comprising roughly 42% of the composition. It’s responsible for that distinctive cooling feeling—and it’s what interacts with your follicles.
Menthol switches on specific skin receptors called TRPM8. These are the same receptors that create that tingle when you eat a mint. Once they’re activated, a chain of reactions follows.
Blood vessels widen first. More blood reaches the follicles, bringing extra nutrients and oxygen with it. Craighead and Alexander measured this vasodilation in humans: skin blood flow tripled following menthol application. So that part, at least, has been confirmed in people.
Then there’s IGF-1 stimulation—a growth factor central to the hair cycle. In the Korean research, its expression shot up by 89% in treated mice. IGF-1 extends the hair growth phase and energises the cells that produce hair.
Menthol also appears to wake up dormant follicles faster. Your hair normally cycles between growing and resting phases. Peppermint oil seems to cut the resting period short and prompt follicles to get back to work sooner.
The elephant in the room: no human trials
Here’s where things get problematic. Despite encouraging mouse results, nobody has yet tested peppermint oil alone on humans for treating hair loss. A 2024 scientific review states this plainly.
The sole human study involving menthol is from 2024, and it used a complicated mixture: a probiotic, menthol, salicylic acid, and panthenol. Teasing out how much menthol contributed to any results is practically impossible.
This gap in human data creates a genuine issue. Laboratory mice have a convenient feature: their follicles can all be synchronised into the resting phase, allowing researchers to watch uniform regrowth. Our scalps don’t work that way. Androgenetic alopecia involves hormonal processes that these animal models simply don’t replicate.
None of this proves peppermint oil won’t work in humans. It just means we can’t be certain either way.
How it actually works
Unlike natural treatments such as pumpkin seed oil or saw palmetto, peppermint oil doesn’t target DHT (dihydrotestosterone)—the hormone that gradually shrinks your hair follicles. It works through different pathways entirely.
There are essentially two mechanisms at play. First, blood circulation. Menthol opens up blood vessels and boosts scalp blood flow. Well-fed follicles stand a better chance of producing healthy hair.
Second, it directly stimulates dermal papilla cells—those tiny hair-making factories tucked at the base of each follicle. The increased IGF-1 and alkaline phosphatase activity seen in the study suggests menthol revs up their output.
This approach has its merits. It might suit people who aren’t dealing with androgenetic alopecia specifically, but simply want to perk up a sluggish scalp. That said, if DHT is driving your hair loss, peppermint oil isn’t tackling the underlying problem.
If you fancy giving it a go
A few ground rules if you decide to try it. The concentration in the study was 3%, diluted in a carrier oil. That’s the only dose with any validation behind it—even if it was mice-only validation. Slathering on more won’t speed things up.
Pure essential oil is absolutely not an option. Undiluted menthol irritates skin, can cause burns, and at high concentrations actually becomes toxic to the very cells you’re trying to help. Research on dermal papilla cells shows that beyond a certain point, menthol does more damage than good.
In practical terms, mix a few drops with jojoba, coconut, or argan oil and massage it into your scalp. The cooling sensation confirms the menthol is getting to work on microcirculation.
Some sensible precautions: keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes. Test on a small patch of skin before going all over. And if you’re pregnant or considering it for a child, speak to a doctor first.
What you can realistically expect
Peppermint oil won’t regrow hair on a scalp that’s been bald for years. Follicles that have permanently shut down don’t spring back to life, whatever oil you use.
What it can probably achieve is better local circulation and a more favourable environment for growth. If your hair is thinning or your scalp feels lacklustre, it might be worth trying alongside other treatments.
Just don’t mistake sensation for results. That cool tingle from menthol feels like something’s happening. It’s pleasant, and yes, it does boost blood flow—but it doesn’t guarantee you’ll see regrowth.
