When the mirror stops matching the memory
Retirement did not change Giuly’s habits. He kept an athlete’s lifestyle. Time went on regardless.
By 46, photographs were telling a different story: hair thinning noticeably at the crown, the hairline pulling back. Early baldness, setting in fast.
“I’ve always had long hair ever since I started my career,” Giuly said in an exclusive interview. “So when I began losing much of it so rapidly, that affected me.”
That last sentence is the whole point. A player who had built his public image around a signature head of hair was watching it disappear, and his self-confidence went with it.

Looking for a technique, not a miracle
Once he accepted that the loss was affecting him, Giuly went to see Dr Cinik.
At the first consultation in Istanbul, the photographs he brought left little room for interpretation. The diagnosis was Stage V on the Norwood scale, which is advanced male pattern baldness: significant frontal recession combined with loss at the crown. Not an early case, not an easy one.
Given the extent of it, Dr Cinik advised his Sapphire FUE technique. The procedure is minimally invasive: follicular unit grafts are placed with dedicated implantation tools, and the incisions are small enough to keep scarring to a minimum.

An eight-hour operation, and a beard on top
On the day, Giuly settled in with the same stubbornness that made him a world-class winger. He needed it.
Over nearly eight hours, Dr Cinik’s team extracted and reimplanted more than 3,800 grafts, rebuilding the density of the hairline follicle by follicle.
The team also carried out a beard transplant in the same session, using special hypodermic needles to place follicles into the cheek and chin areas that had thinned over the years.
Two restorations in one sitting is a demanding day for the operating team, and usually for the patient too. Giuly stayed relaxed throughout, which he put down to Dr Cinik’s needle-free anaesthesia. The protocol removes the injections that most people dread, and it is the reason a session this long stays bearable.
A successful comeback
A few months later, Giuly looked in the mirror and barely recognised the man looking back: hair regrown, a well-kept stubble beard, and none of the retreat that had bothered him at 46.
He played this comeback match the way he played the others. Baldness lost.
